How to Match Region, Realm, and Character for WoW Retail Gold

Match the offer to the recipient character’s WoW region, Retail version, realm, faction, account context, and exact name before comparing quantities or prices.

Do not compare quantities or prices until the offer and the recipient character agree on the live WoW region, Retail game version, realm, faction where the proposed method requires it, account context, and exact character name. Region is the first hard boundary: Blizzard says WoW accounts, progress, game time, and items cannot be transferred between regions.1 A matching character or realm name by itself is not enough.

Find the destination on your current screens

  1. In the Battle.net launcher, select World of Warcraft and note the region tied to the account you are opening.
  2. At character selection, confirm that you opened modern World of Warcraft—WoW Retail—not Classic Era, Hardcore, a seasonal mode, or Classic Progression.
  3. Copy the recipient’s character name exactly, including accents and other special characters, and record the displayed realm.
  4. Open the intended character and confirm that it remains available on the expected account and faction.
  5. Compare those details with the offer’s selected region, game version, realm, faction requirement, recipient format, and proposed delivery method. Never provide a password, authenticator approval, recovery code, or access to the account.

Retail supports an in-game cross-realm trading feature.3 That does not make the realm field disposable: it still identifies the recipient and helps expose a listing that assumes the wrong route. A statement that direct trade works across realms also does not prove that mail, Auction House activity, or another delivery method will behave the same way.

Blizzard’s real-money rule is the decisive drawback

Blizzard’s current support policy says players may not buy or sell WoW items, products, or services for real money, that involved accounts may be penalized, and that gold bought or sold for real money must use the WoW Token service.2 Matching every destination field can prevent a misdelivery, but it does not make an unauthorized real-money gold transaction compliant.

This policy risk changes the practical recommendation: use an official or in-game route when account standing matters. Do not interpret a seller’s completed-order label, delivery estimate, or compatibility statement as evidence that Blizzard permits the transaction.

As of August 31, 2026, Blizzard’s support page says WoW Tokens are available in World of Warcraft Retail and Classic Progression, but not Classic Era, Hardcore, or Season of Discovery.4 For Retail gold, a Token bought for real money is sold through the in-game Auction House; Blizzard also says Token purchases require the WoW region to match the country registered on the Battle.net account and impose additional account restrictions.4 Check the current in-game quote rather than relying on an old amount.

Which choice fits your situation?

  • Use the WoW Token route when it is available to your eligible Retail account and you want the real-money-to-gold route described by Blizzard.
  • Earn gold, reduce the required amount, or wait when Token eligibility fails or the current in-game result does not fit the goal.
  • Do not proceed with a real-money third-party gold transaction merely because its region, realm, and character fields match; Blizzard’s stated policy remains the overriding constraint.2
  • Leave any listing that changes its region, game version, recipient, or delivery method after you have made the comparison.

If you still need to inspect how marketplace options describe their destinations, apply the same field-by-field comparison to every listing and keep seller statements separate from facts visible on your character screen.

Reconcile one listing without exposing the account

  1. Write down the recipient’s region, Retail version, realm, faction, and exact character name from current screens.
  2. Record the listing’s corresponding values exactly as selected, not merely what appears in its title or image.
  3. Name the proposed delivery method and the specific in-game event that would count as completion.
  4. Mark each field as matched, mismatched, or unstated. Do not convert an unstated field into a match.
  5. Reject the option if any required field is mismatched, if the character cannot be identified unambiguously, or if the route changes.
  6. Do not share credentials or approve a login request. A legitimate destination check does not require another person to control the account.

Retail and Classic are separate destinations

If the recipient is actually in a Classic environment, use the Classic-specific region and faction checks instead of applying Retail assumptions.

The same version-first principle applies in other games with parallel environments; the Path of Exile comparison shows why a familiar currency name does not establish the correct game or league.

Stop before payment when

  • The selected region differs from the recipient’s WoW region.
  • The offer does not explicitly identify WoW Retail.
  • The realm name is incomplete, ambiguous, or associated with another region.
  • The faction requirement conflicts with the character or is unexplained for the proposed method.
  • The exact recipient cannot be confirmed because of spelling, special characters, or realm formatting.
  • The seller requests a password, authenticator approval, recovery information, screen sharing, or remote account access.
  • The proposed delivery method is missing, changes unexpectedly, or cannot be used on the live character screens.
  • The listing presents a completed seller action as proof that Blizzard permits the transaction.
  • Any field remains unstated and the seller will not clarify it in writing.

Make the account-policy choice before the price choice

A compatible destination answers only whether the stated route points to the intended character. Blizzard’s policy determines whether the real-money route is acceptable for the account. Choose the WoW Token when the current account and region qualify, or earn, reduce, or delay the gold requirement. If you compare third-party listings for context, stop at comparison rather than treating a technical match as permission to proceed.
